Join us for the 2017 FEIAA Executive Forum on Tuesday, May 16, for a day of leadership training. The theme of the 2017 Executive Forum is “Leadership: Being a Positive Force for Change.” The Executive Forum will be held in the Grand Ballroom of The George Washington University’s Marvin Center. It is presented by the Federal Executive Institute Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM’s) Federal Executive Institute (FEI) and Hooks Book Events.

The theme of the 2017 Executive Forum is “Leadership: Being a Positive Force for Change.” The Forum is Tuesday, May 16 at The Marvin Center on the campus of The George Washington University. Following the arrival of President Trump’s Administration in January 2017, all of us are looking for ways to more fully engage with the new leadership in our departments and agencies. We, as government executives, senior leaders, managers, and supervisors, are embracing challenges in leading organizations and teams facing different ways of doing business. To help address these challenges, FEIAA has assembled a set of outstanding presenters for this year’s Executive Forum. The topics are: unleashing the magic of kindness; calling upon your GRIT (guts, resilience, initiative, and tenacity); asking the right questions; and leading with your strengths. These sessions are designed to provide tools, techniques, and approaches that you can use in both your personal and professional lives to be a positive force for change.

Unleashing the Magic of Kindness
Presenter: Patrick Malone, PhD, Executive in Residence, Department of Public Administration and Policy, American University, Washington, DC


Far from being an air-quoted soft skill, simple kindness opens the door to a workplace of trust and teamwork. Its positive impact on self and others is well-established, allowing for greater contributions in an impersonal world often marked by cynicism and doubt. This session focuses on establishing a fresh understanding of the concept of kindness at work. This perspective will help you harness your intellectual and emotional skills to find happiness and create relationships marked by compassion and caring.

: GRIT to Great: How Perseverance, Passion, and Pluck Take You from Ordinary to Extraordinary
Presenter: Robin Koval, Co-Founder of the Kaplan Thaler Group, New York, NY, and President and CEO of the Truth Initiative, Washington, DC

Are you dazzled by the idea that some people who get ahead or reach the “corner office” are simply gifted, or well-connected, or both? Research shows that we far overvalue talent and intellectual ability in our culture. The fact is so many people get ahead—even the gifted ones—by putting in thousands of hours of practice, and extra sweat equity, to make their own luck. This session deals with understanding and brings forth your personal attributes of working with guts, resilience, initiative, and tenacity (GRIT). This understanding will help you in meeting the goals for your personal life and career.

: Ask More: The Power of Questions to Open Doors, Uncover Solutions,
and Spark Change
Presenter: Frank Sesno, Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs, The George Washington University, Washington, DC

What hidden skill links successful people in all walks of life? The answer is surprisingly simple: They ask the right questions at the right time. Questions help us break down barriers, discover secrets, solve puzzles, and imagine new ways of doing things. From questions that cement relationships, to those that help us plan, this session will explore different types of inquiry in various personal and professional settings. You’ll know what to ask and when, what you should listen for, and what you can expect as the outcome.

: My Journey with Strengths-Based Leadership
Presenter: Suzanne Logan, EdD, Director, OPM’s Center for Leadership Development, Charlottesville, VA

Dr. Logan will describe her experience with strengths-based leadership, including how she learned about it through the work of Marcus Buckingham and by introducing the strengths-based philosophy to OPM and other agencies. She will discuss the benefits of adopting these research-based practices and what they bring to government departments and agencies.

StandOut: Driving Engagement and Accelerating Performance Through the Team
Presenter: Christian Gomez, Vice President, The Marcus Buckingham Company (TMBC)

Transforming engagement and creating a high-performing culture—success at both of these comes down to one thing—people. Getting the most out of people, unleashing change, and increasing efficiencies is accomplished by knowing and building on people’s strengths, focusing them, and engaging them. TMBC’s research, published in the book StandOut and put into practice on the StandOut platform, helps organizations identify people’s strengths and measure and track the results of putting best practices to work. Learn how leaders have used this approach to create meaningful and lasting change within their organizations.

Special Bonus for Executive Forum Participants
As an additional bonus this year, all participants will take the StandOut Strengths Inventory prior to attending the Forum. This inventory is an assessment designed to help you understand your strengths and then leverage those strengths to accelerate performance. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. Participants are asked to bring their results to the Forum for use during the final training session of the day.

In addition, all Executive Forum participants will receive three books: The Handbook of Federal Government Leadership and Administration: Transforming, Performing, and Innovating in a Complex World edited by Patrick S. Malone, David H. Rosenbloom and Bill Valdez; GRIT to Great: How Perseverance, Passion, and Pluck Take You from Ordinary to Extraordinary by Robin Koval and Linda Kaplan Thaler; and Ask More: The Power of Questions to Open Doors, Uncover Solutions, and Spark Change by Frank Sesno.
