Wellness Matters: The Importance of Sleep

 SECTIONS:

Information provided by Federal Occupational Health

Getting a good night’s rest is just as important as eating right and getting enough exercise. Adults should aim for seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Getting adequate sleep, however, goes beyond being in bed for a set number of hours. The quality and scheduled time of sleep are two other important factors for feeling well rested and energized each day.

Tips to Help Improve Sleep Quality:

  • Turn off all electronic devices while preparing for bedtime.
  • Stick to a regular bedtime and wake time every day, even on weekends.
  • Cut ties with caffeine by the early afternoon and avoid large late-night meals.
  • Skip the late-afternoon nap, as it can make it harder to sleep at bedtime.
  •  Perform a relaxing bedtime ritual (e.g., meditation, journaling, stretching, reading).
