“And All at Once, Summer Collapsed into Fall”—Oscar Wilde
Share |

Well, the summer is coming to an end and hurricane season is in full swing. By the time you read this article, Hurricane Florence will hopefully have come and gone for those of us in the mid-Atlantic. Now that everyone is back at school, autumn begins on September 22 and we begin a new fiscal year on October 1. It’s not quite time to get ready for Old Man Winter, but it is time to get those last days of sun and fun and get ready for the leaves falling, football, pumpkins, and maybe a jacket.

I hope you all spent some time remembering (in your own way) those who fell on September 11, 2001, and those who have fallen since in our war against terrorism. Patriot Day is a day we will all remember for the rest of our lives.

I have some great news for the association. Thanks to the herculean efforts and tenacity of our own Marc Flaster and Senior Executives Association (SEA) President Bill Valdez, I am pleased to announce that SEA and the Federal Executive Institute Alumni Association (FEIAA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU will significantly benefit both organizations and their members. There will be more on this “partnership” later in this newsletter and in upcoming ones.

For me, this is an important and logical step for both FEIAA and SEA. The benefits are yet to be seen but I know they will be numerous. As they say, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

Please provide me with your aspirations and ideas for the forum, this newsletter, and timely topics. Send your comments or other ideas to office@feiaa.org or directly to me at peter.s.duklis@hud.gov.

President's Column:
Employees Leave Bad Bosses
Employees don’t leave organizations, they leave bad bosses. The worst place an employee can be is stuck in an organization with a micromanager who doesn’t care about their development and where there are no opportunities for growth and advancement.

FEI 50th Anniversary: Growing Up at FEI
About 30 years before I attended FEI’s Leadership for a Democratic Society (LDS) course, you would have found me running around the halls of FEI, ducking in and out of offices, riding my bike on the driveway or working on homework in the computer lab. It’s hard to recall all the details but I mainly remember everything seeming bigger.

Class Notes:
Congratulations to LDS 446!
Thank you, all, for the privilege to give the commencement address for LDS class 446. As I look at all of you, I am reminded of the first time we saw each other gathered here in the OD room on Sunday, July 8. We all came as 59 individuals with a name card which simply had the FEI emblem, our name, our agency, and a smartly attached lanyard.
